State officials say more than 2,000 people have submitted applications for possible jobs with an oil spill cleanup on the Alabama Coast. The Alabama Career Centers in Mobile County have had plenty of applications and are no longer accepting them. Officials say the centers in Baldwin County will continue accepting applications from Baldwin County residents for a few more days. BP and the contractor are seeking 500 workers each for Mobile and Baldwin counties to help with cleanup if the oil spill comes ashore. All rights reserved. | Career counselors offer top 10 list of tips for job hunters - Digital Collegian Posted: 19 May 2010 04:32 AM PDT Career counselors offer top 10 list of tips for job huntersTuesday, May 4, 2010University Park, Pa. – Throughout life, people are always willing to give advice: wait 30 minutes after eating before swimming, never eat yellow snow, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Never underestimate the value of good advice, especially when seeking employment. First and foremost, they will tell you, there are no shortcuts to gaining entrance into the work force. Working hard and being polite, connected and willing to network are valuable traits for anyone, especially those seeking a new job. Penn State career counselors from the Bank of America Career Services Center and the Smeal College of Business have collected these tips, sometimes overlooked by job hunters, to help anyone from new graduates to midcareer professionals get ahead in their searches. 1. Get your credentials in order –- your resume, your LinkedIn account, your cover letters and thank you letters -- so you are always ready to start or resume the process. 2. Make sure your voicemail, Facebook and website entries are presentable, so a potential employer does not receive embarrassing information about you through these various avenues. Search for your name online and examine the results thoroughly; what you find is what employers will see as well. 3. If you are still in school, take advantage of opportunities to showcase your skills, such as events like case competitions, mock trials and other contests. In April 2010 Smeal College of Business students made it to Paris for the final round of an international business simulation contest and engineering students took third place at the national Rube Goldberg Machine Contest held at Purdue University. 4. Build your network -- share your resume and employment aspirations with your colleagues, friends, relatives, professors, alumni and anyone who might be in a position to assist you in your job search. 5. Before you leave campus or your last employer, identify faculty, staff and coworkers who will be willing to serve as references for you. Provide them with a current version of your resume and a statement about your career aspirations so they can do the best possible job for you as a reference, and inform you of suitable job openings they may learn about. 6. Develop alternative plans, such as graduate or professional school, government employment, employment in the nonprofit sector, volunteer work and so on. Today's difficult job market may cause you to shift to "plan B." 7. Consider compromising in terms of geographic location, starting salary, type of industry, type of work and related factors. It's not where you start but where you finish that really counts. Compromising at the beginning of your career may get your foot in the door and help you to get where you want to end up. 8. Be strategic and stay organized. Develop a thorough job search plan and follow through on all leads. Finding a job is demanding work itself that requires persistence and energy – as well as a plan of action. 9. Study potential employers beyond what is listed in their official print and online materials. Search for company names online and become familiar with recent news reported about them. 10. Practice your interview skills with others who have had experience interviewing, such as career counselors and alumni from your university. At Penn State, students and alumni are encouraged to visit the Career Services Center to take advantage of the many other career services available, such as "drop-in counseling" and mock interviews, as well as workshops available online at http://studentaffairs.psu.edu/career/. Bonus advice: Stay positive. You only need one job; it's a numbers game. The more employers you engage, the more likely you'll connect with that one employer who will hire you. One last piece of advice: Enjoy the journey.

PHOENIX – Dozens of people looking for a new job are getting some help reinventing themselves at a job fair in Phoenix. More than 40 companies, like Bank of America and Discover, were at the event. Some of them were even hiring on the spot. Careerbuilder.com and University of Phoenix experts teamed up to offer employment counsel, with workshops on topics such as interview preparation, resume writing and personal presentation. "Presentation and resume writing are very, very important skills. If you think about it you never really get a second chance to make the first impression," says David Fitzgerald, with the University of Phoenix. "The look that you come with and the confidence that you bring to that interview will greatly assist you in getting the career that you're looking for." Organizers say, "Activity on CareerBuilder.com indicates that Phoenix employers are beginning to initiate growth strategies once again, with jobs in information technology, marketing, sales, customer service and business development experiencing the most growth." The Phoenix "Reinvent Your Future" event is the third in a series of 16 career retooling events across the country being hosted by University of Phoenix and CareerBuilder, featuring Stedman Graham. The next event will take place in St. Louis on Monday, May 24.
