| Hanley Yanked as D-Backs Drop Marlins - NBC Miami Posted: 18 May 2010 03:29 AM PDT Some said Edwin Jackson was effectively wild. Others said the Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander was dominating. However they wanted to describe Jackson's outing, it was definitely something they've been waiting for from the former All-Star. Jackson struck out a career-high 12 in eight shutout innings to lead the Diamondbacks to a 5-1 victory over the Florida Marlins on Monday night. "He did a good job of mixing it up," Marlins outfielder Chris Coghlan said. "His slider got better as the game went on. You got a guy going low-90s, his slider was working well. I think he was a little erratic in the beginning of the game and sometimes we were helping him out. Toward the end, he was throwing everything for strikes." Stephen Drew, John Hester, and Conor Jackson each drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who won for just the second time in 10 games. Jackson (2-5), who went 13-9 with Detroit last season and earned a spot on the All-Star team, came in struggling with a 7.43 ERA and was facing a team that he was 0-3 with an ERA over 11 against in four career appearances. Manuel Gonzalez became the first Venezuelan umpire in major league baseball history, working at third base. Gonzalez, 30, was filling in for John Hirschbeck, who was dealing with a personal matter. Jackson picked up his first win since April 11, his second start of the season. He allowed four hits and walked two batters while throwing 76 of his 114 pitches for strikes. "I was kind of effectively wild. That's probably the best way to put it," Jackson said. Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch saw it differently. "It was a pretty dominating performance," he said. "His approach has always been there, but tonight he stayed within himself and went with what was working." Jackson was effective early, striking out the side in the fourth and holding the Marlins without a hit until Cody Ross opened the fifth with a single. He struck out the side again in the seventh. "My fastball was erratic, but I was able to throw strikes and that's the bottom line," Jackson said. The Marlins, coming off a four-game sweep of the New York Mets, recorded just six hits in their second loss in eight games. Starter Chris Volstad (3-4) took the loss, allowing four runs -- two earned -- and seven hits in five innings. "He got ahead of the hitters, but just couldn't put hitters away," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. Drew's RBI single in the first inning gave the Diamondbacks the early lead. In the second, Arizona stretched their lead as Andy LaRoche singled and Chris Young walked to lead off the inning. Tony Abreu followed with a soft line drive to short left field. Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez made an effort on the ball, which dropped in front of him as he raced back toward short left before accidentally kicking the ball 100 feet away from him and allowing LaRoche and Young to score on the error. While Ramirez jogged to the ball, Abreu reached third base on the play and scored on a single by Hester to make it 4-0. Ramirez came out of the game the next inning due to a lack of effort, according to Gonzalez. Ramirez fouled a pitch off his left shin in the first. After a brief delay, he stayed in the game before bouncing into an inning-ending double play. He was eventually replaced by Brian Barden. "Hanley left the game because we felt -- he got smoked in the ankle -- but we felt whether he was hurt or not hurt or whatever it was, we felt that the effort wasn't there that we wanted," Gonzalez said. "There are some injuries there, but we expect an effort from 25 guys on this team and when that doesn't happen, we have got to do something." Gonzalez was unsure if Ramirez would be back in the starting lineup on Tuesday. Ramirez did not speak with reporters after the game. The Diamondbacks added a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Conor Jackson scoring Hester, who doubled off Chris Leroux to lead off the inning. Aaron Heilman relieved Jackson in the ninth and allowed an RBI single to Ross with two outs before striking out Ronny Paulino to end the game. Drew was hurt by two great defensive plays by the Marlins outfield. Center fielder Cameron Maybin, who threw out Drew in the first while trying to stretch a single into a double, robbed Drew of an extra-base hit in the third as he made a diving catch on the warning track. In the fifth, Ross made a diving grab near the right-field line. | Texas MLB Capsules: Oliver, Guerrero lead Rangers past ... - Brownsville Herald Posted: 18 May 2010 03:15 AM PDT ARLINGTON — Darren Oliver and Vladimir Guerrero helped their new team beat their old one. Oliver pitched two perfect innings of relief, Guerrero had two hits and the Texas Rangers beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Monday night in the season's first matchup between the AL West rivals. Oliver, who pitched for the Angels from 2007-09, and Guerrero, an offensive mainstay in Anaheim from 2004-09, both signed with Texas as free agents in the offseason. Oliver had to be careful not to smile when facing longtime friends. "It's hard to look those guys in the face when I'm out there pitching," Oliver said. "I might start laughing or something because I know them so good. "They know me pretty good and I know them pretty good. It's fun. That's why we're out here playing. I'm sure they couldn't wait to face me and I couldn't wait to face them. After three years, you get to know guys pretty well." Oliver has allowed one earned run over his last 12 appearances to lower his ERA from 3.86 to 1.74. "Darren Oliver gave us two innings of excellent baseball," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He saved us there." Guerrero has also been a major contributor to the Rangers' surge into first place in the division, leading the team with 31 RBIs. He insisted earlier Monday that he has no desire to show the Angels that they erred by not re-signing him. "I don't need to show anything to anybody," Guerrero said through a translator. "I always feel I've done my job my whole career." Oliver and Guerrero had help from Derek Holland, who pitched into the sixth inning, and Nelson Cruz, who drove in two runs. Holland (2-0) allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings in his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on May 12. Neftali Feliz got three outs for his ninth save in 11 chances as the Rangers opened a seven-game homestand after being swept in a three-game weekend series in Toronto. Feliz, Oliver and Dustin Nippert retired the final 11 Angels. Mike Napoli hit a deep drive with one out in the ninth in a bid for his second homer of the game, but Texas center fielder Julio Borbon made the catch with his back against the wall. The wind wasn't blowing as briskly as usual on Monday night, and Feliz was the beneficiary. "Some balls were getting knocked down a little bit," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "I don't think the ball was flying like it has the potential to here, that's for sure." Napoli and Torii Hunter homered for the Angels, whose three-game winning streak ended. Los Angeles starter Scott Kazmir (2-4) gave up four runs and nine hits in seven innings, his longest outing of the season. Kazmir entered with a 6-1 record and 2.05 ERA against Texas, his lowest ERA against any AL opponent. Borbon led off Texas' four-run third by beating out an infield single, and he was awarded second when second baseman Howie Kendrick's throw to first bounced out of play for an error. Borbon advanced to third on Elvis Andrus' single and scored on Michael Young's sacrifice fly. Ian Kinsler added an RBI double, and after Guerrero's bloop double, Cruz's two-run double made it 4-0. Holland didn't allow a hit until the fifth when Juan Rivera had a one-out infield single, the first of four straight hits by the Angels. Napoli followed with a two-run shot to narrow the deficit to 4-2, and Hunter led off the sixth with a 420-foot drive to pull the Angels within 4-3. But the bottom line was another road loss for the Angels, who have dropped nine of 11 away from Anaheim. "We need to go into a visiting ballpark and make that field yours, and we're not doing that this year," Scioscia said. "We're not doing the things we need to do on a consistent basis. Tonight we let some things get through the cracks and we've got to tighten some things up." NOTES: The first pitch was delayed 18 minutes while the field was readied after heavy pregame rain. ... Washington gave OF Josh Hamilton a night off, saying he is fatigued "both mentally and physically." Hamilton, 1 for 13 during the weekend series in Toronto, wanted to stay in the lineup, but admitted he was "clueless" at the plate against the Blue Jays. Hamilton started 36 of the Rangers' first 38 games this season. ... Angels RF Bobby Abreu was scratched from the starting lineup due to back stiffness. He was replaced by Reggie Willits. Abreu pinch hit in the ninth, striking out to end the game. Salty tries out new routine for throwing problems OKLAHOMA CITY — All that is keeping Jarrod Saltalamacchia from being a big leaguer again is a few seemingly simple throws. | Lane Kiffin's 'dream job' will pay him $4 million. For ... - Collegebaseball.rivals.com Posted: 17 May 2010 02:33 AM PDT
That number is twice what Kiffin made at Tennessee and makes him one of the highest-paid college coaches in the country. It puts the 35-year-old, would-be wunderkind on par with established veterans Mack Brown, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Les Miles and Bob Stoops, and ahead of Jim Tressel – all of whom have won at least 12 games in a season en route to national championships clearly of their own making. Kiffin's venerable father/defensive coordinator, 70-year-old Monte Kiffin, is reportedly shattering the record he set at Tennessee as college football's first million-dollar assistant with a salary of "around $2 million" in Los Angeles. It's approximately what he made ($2.2 million) as mastermind of the Super Bowl-winning defense of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Compared to his dad, Lane himself admits during one of the interviews, "I haven't done anything." But he is being rewarded handsomely for it. As a private school, USC doesn't release employees' salaries (or confirm them if they're leaked, as is the case in the HBO episode). But the Chronicle of Higher Education reported last year that Kiffin's predecessor and former boss, Pete Carroll, was the highest-paid private university employee in America at $4.4 million a year after delivering seven straight Pac-10 titles and a pair of national championships (both with the younger Kiffin on staff). Second on that list was Columbia University dermatologist David Silvers at $4.3 million a year, with countless presidents, scientists, doctors and Nobel Prize winners trailing far behind. To paraphrase, never was so much given by so many for so little – but hey, what's skin cancer compared to a good interview, the right last name and an athletic director running out of options as the end of recruiting season approached? Job V.s. Career - what's the difference you ask? A HUGE difference. Job as defined by dictionary.com means a post of employment. Career as defined by dictionary.com means an occupation or profession, esp. one requiring special training, followed as one's lifework Job implies a short term project or status in your life. While on the other hand career implies you are in it for the long haul. So why am I pointing out the distinction? Recruiters and hiring managers hiring with a couple of goals in mind: long term company growth and profitability. In order to accomplish this, they need to hire people who want to be there in the long term (career). People that they will be able to provide with specialized training and development that are in line with the company goals and vision. If they are constantly trying to fill the same vacancy because people are only there for the short term (job), then the company will never grow and be profitable. With this distinction in mind, you can now review your resume to ensure you are looking for a career and not a job. And the next time you are at a career fair and you are speaking to a recruiter, you can let them know you are looking for a career and not a job. Why not put these into practice and use this at today's job fair - or is it a career fair:
This job fair is a professional, general, engineering, oil & gas and technology job fair. Please bring copies of your resume. An interpreter for the deaf will be available.
