| Specter's career, party switch on line in Pa. vote - msnbc.com Posted: 18 May 2010 01:16 PM PDT Levittown - Embattled U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, a fixture in Pennsylvania politics and Washington for decades, finds out Tuesday whether switching parties was the right career move in the latest of numerous close election challenges, this time from U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak. The candidates were continuing to campaign in the hours before polls closed in the too-close-to-call Democratic primary for the seat held by Specter since 1981.Specter, a longtime moderate, is running his first Senate campaign as a Democrat after he changed parties last year. That theme has dominated the campaign. The fifth-term senator has defended his switch as a decision of principle. President Barack Obama and other top Democrats have embraced Specter, who has used his willingness to cross party lines on key votes to bolster his clout in Congress.Sestak, a retired Navy vice admiral who has represented a suburban Philadelphia district since 2007, accuses Specter of switching parties to save his job, and says Specter cannot be trusted to support Democratic Party values.Turnout at the polls on Tuesday was light through mid-afternoon.In recent days, Specter and Sestak have also argued over who has the best chance of beating the likely Republican nominee, former U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey, in the fall.Specter has leaned heavily on Obama's endorsement, repeatedly citing a TV ad that used footage from a September rally in Philadelphia at which Obama spoke, and get-out-the-vote efforts by the key unions backing him.Sestak has tried to harness voter anger over political gridlock and, with Pennsylvania's 9 percent unemployment rate at its highest in more than a quarter century, the recession. Sestak is endorsed by NARAL Pro-Choice America and the liberal advocacy group, MoveOn.Org.Specter contends he only switched parties after his vote for Obama's economic stimulus bill angered GOP voters and prompted a primary challenge from the more conservative Toomey that Specter concluded he could not win.To dispel voter skepticism about the motives behind his switch, he has cited his past support for abortion rights, civil rights and organized labor. He had apparently won over Winifred Watkins, 65, who wore an Obama T-shirt as she cast her vote in Pittsburgh."Even when Arlen Specter was a Republican I think he did some positive things," Watkins said. "Sestak, I don't have any faith in him."However, what Specter calls a record of independent voting also has made it difficult for him to appeal to primary voters who typically support candidates who adhere closely to party lines.Chris Rooney, 30, of Philadelphia, said he voted for Sestak because he worries about Specter's health and age, as well as his commitment to the Democratic Party."If the winds change again in the next five years, he'll be a Republican," said Rooney.____Associated Press Writers Patrick Walters in Philadelphia and Joe Mandak in Pittsburgh contributed to this report. | Lane Kiffin's 'dream job' will pay him $4 million. For ... - Collegebaseball.rivals.com Posted: 17 May 2010 02:33 AM PDT
That number is twice what Kiffin made at Tennessee and makes him one of the highest-paid college coaches in the country. It puts the 35-year-old, would-be wunderkind on par with established veterans Mack Brown, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Les Miles and Bob Stoops, and ahead of Jim Tressel – all of whom have won at least 12 games in a season en route to national championships clearly of their own making. Kiffin's venerable father/defensive coordinator, 70-year-old Monte Kiffin, is reportedly shattering the record he set at Tennessee as college football's first million-dollar assistant with a salary of "around $2 million" in Los Angeles. It's approximately what he made ($2.2 million) as mastermind of the Super Bowl-winning defense of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Compared to his dad, Lane himself admits during one of the interviews, "I haven't done anything." But he is being rewarded handsomely for it. As a private school, USC doesn't release employees' salaries (or confirm them if they're leaked, as is the case in the HBO episode). But the Chronicle of Higher Education reported last year that Kiffin's predecessor and former boss, Pete Carroll, was the highest-paid private university employee in America at $4.4 million a year after delivering seven straight Pac-10 titles and a pair of national championships (both with the younger Kiffin on staff). Second on that list was Columbia University dermatologist David Silvers at $4.3 million a year, with countless presidents, scientists, doctors and Nobel Prize winners trailing far behind. To paraphrase, never was so much given by so many for so little – but hey, what's skin cancer compared to a good interview, the right last name and an athletic director running out of options as the end of recruiting season approached? Job V.s. Career - what's the difference you ask? A HUGE difference. Job as defined by dictionary.com means a post of employment. Career as defined by dictionary.com means an occupation or profession, esp. one requiring special training, followed as one's lifework Job implies a short term project or status in your life. While on the other hand career implies you are in it for the long haul. So why am I pointing out the distinction? Recruiters and hiring managers hiring with a couple of goals in mind: long term company growth and profitability. In order to accomplish this, they need to hire people who want to be there in the long term (career). People that they will be able to provide with specialized training and development that are in line with the company goals and vision. If they are constantly trying to fill the same vacancy because people are only there for the short term (job), then the company will never grow and be profitable. With this distinction in mind, you can now review your resume to ensure you are looking for a career and not a job. And the next time you are at a career fair and you are speaking to a recruiter, you can let them know you are looking for a career and not a job. Why not put these into practice and use this at today's job fair - or is it a career fair:
This job fair is a professional, general, engineering, oil & gas and technology job fair. Please bring copies of your resume. An interpreter for the deaf will be available.
