The Fourth Annual Career Day was held for eighth grade students at William J. Johnston Middle School. On May 12, students learned about different careers. People from various professions taught eighth-graders about their jobs.

"Career day helped us to pick our future jobs," Mike Kiro said.

Every year people volunteer to talk to Johnston middle schoolers. Many of these people work and live in our community and have children in our school. These visitors start students thinking about what they could do as a profession.

"The program was put in place to help students make a connection between their education and the world of work," guidance counselor Meg Lewis said.

Johnston students learned about many careers. Thirteen volunteers from our community visited our school. Some of their professions are: lawyer, firefighter, nurse, auto-technician, and software programmer.

"I love talking about my profession," said software programmer Mark Fortin said.

Matt Sawchuck, an auto technician, was one of the interesting volunteers. He began his training at a tech school and stated that you need to be good in math to be auto technician. It was an exciting day to learn about career options.

"We learned about their jobs and what they thought was the best part was," eighth-grader Tim Kung said.

Job-seekers look for their own news at Career Fair - Mercury

WEST CONSHOHOCKEN — As Wall Street struggled on Friday with the latest news on the national job front, people in the area took matters into their own hands by attending the All Around Philly Career Fair.

With 25 companies on hand, recent college graduates, people looking to get back into the job force and those looking to improve their current situations gathered at the Marriott in West Conshohocken with resumes in hand for a chance to network with potential employers.

The event was sponsored by the Journal Register Company and allaroundphilly.com.

Representing The Carney Group, a full-service recruitment and placement firm serving the Greater Philadelphia Region, was Mike Carney, who said the strong turnout at the career fair was an indication that while the economy has improved in recent months, there is still room for improvement.

"One of the signs of the times that the economy is still struggling is that we don't see the big local companies here, and that's because they are not hiring," Carney said.

But that doesn't mean that companies like The Carney Group are not looking for a few good men and women.

"The reason we come to these career fairs is because we are looking to meet good people, meet good candidates," Carney said. "I had a company call me last Thursday and say they needed three people on Monday. We meet good candidates at these fairs and we are ready to place them when a company needs someone."

Brenda Wittrock from Ascensus, a financial services company, said that one of the things she thought was interesting about the career fair was that not everyone was unemployed.

"It's been half and half," she said. "A lot of people are looking to better themselves."

Wittrock added that while the career fair was a good place for job seekers, it also helps companies like hers to get out into the community. "We get to market our name," she said.

But while companies attend for a variety of reasons, the career fair is for people like Frank Cridland of West Chester, who is looking to get back into the job market after he left a well-known retail store because of all the cuts in the workforce.

"We went from 60-70 full time to 18, and as a manger, I couldn't ask them to do any more than they were doing and I felt like I lost my integrity after a lot of years in the business," he said.

So Cridland left the company, and after a few weeks off, he's looking for a job on his own terms, and that's why he attended Friday's job fair.

"At some point I have to work again, so I decided to see what one of these was like," he said. "I have an idea of what I want and what I'm looking for; there are a lot of varied opportunities."

And giving opportunities to both people looking for a job and companies looking to hire was the reasoning behind the job fair.

"It was a win-win for everyone," Main Line Media News general manager Alexander Gould said. "I think every one benefited from the event. We are proud to play a part in being an important cog in our communities."

For those of you who did not have a chance to make the physical event, a digital All Around Philly career fair continues at AllAroundPhilly.com/careerfair which contains links to all the companies.
