USAA adding 160 new jobs plus 60 seasonal workers at its Tampa offices - St. Petersburg Times

USAA, which provides financial services to members of the military and their families, is already one of the bay area's largest employers, with more than 2,000 workers at its Tampa campus.

It's about to add a couple of hundred more to its Tampa family, growing so much so fast that to house the newcomers it has to lease space at an interim office 14 miles south of its current campus.

During the first quarter, USAA is adding up to 160 positions in Tampa to field mortgage questions for customers of its federal savings bank. About 60 positions have been filled so far, and the rest will be hired by early March.

In addition, the company is hiring about 60 seasonal employees here to support its property and casualty insurance and banking operations. Like the mortgage employees, they'll work out of the interim office in Sabal Park, which is opening in March, said spokesman Clay Allen.

Located on Commerce Park Boulevard in Tampa, USAA's southeast regional campus includes a seven-story main building, a child development center and a cafeteria with 500-plus seats — a total of 560,000 square feet of office space on a 128-acre spread that includes a man-made freshwater lake.

But the complex is near capacity and undergoing renovations.

"It fills our needs very well," Allen said. "It's just we're bursting at the seams."

The company is starting to evaluate its long-term growth strategy, he said. But one "strong option" is constructing another building on its campus rather than pursuing a major relocation.

USAA, based in San Antonio, Texas, offers insurance, banking, investment and retirement products to about 8 million members of the U.S. military and their families. The Tampa office, opened in 1973, has continued to expand during the recession, hiring almost 200 more employees in its banking and financial advice units since late 2009.

Allen said the new jobs will be "very competitive within the mortgage fulfillment industry," but he could not provide a salary range.

"We're thrilled about the many benefits this expansion brings to USAA and the Tampa area," said Robert Hoyland, vice president and general manager of USAA's local operation.
