| Float Nurse began career after raising 3 children - Dayton Daily News Posted: 14 Jan 2011 06:54 AM PST By Ken Mosier, For Health Care Today 9:59 AM Friday, January 14, 2011 When the time to go to work is approaching, Jeanette Maxwell is never sure where she will be working or what she will be doing. Maxwell is a float nurse for Kettering Health Network. "I call at six o'clock (p.m.) and they tell me what unit I am going to," she said. When she reports for duty at 7 p.m., she could be working at Kettering Medical Center, Sycamore Medical Center or at the Kettering Behavioral Medicine Center. Her duties might be in the ICU, the ER or in any unit in the hospital. "I have even floated to Labor/Delivery and I have been floated to Mother/Baby when they were strapped for hands," she explained. With no teen aspirations of becoming a nurse, Maxwell made the decision later in life after being a stay-at-home mom and raising her children. "Three children running to football, to cheerleading, to soccer. Then when the oldest was getting ready to graduate, I said, 'I am going to have to have something to do.'" Maxwell says it was divine intervention that she ended up as a Registered Nurse. "I decided I would just become a (Licensed Practical Nurse) — not that it's easier but it's only one year of school." So she enrolled in a school for that purpose. "Lo and behold, they closed the school the week before I was supposed to start." Then her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor. "Shortly thereafter I said, 'It's now or never, and I went to Sinclair and I passed the entrance exam." At the age of 44 — and the same year her second child graduated from high school — Maxwell graduated from Sinclair with an associate degree in nursing. She says she's glad she waited. "Had I started when I was young, it would have been just a job. But, starting when I did, it was a profession — a profession that I love. I have never regretted it." A classmate at Sinclair, who was converting his LPN to an RN, advised her to improve her patient skills by working in a nursing home for a year or so before applying to a hospital. "I had never touched a patient except in school," she explained. After the nursing home, she applied to Kettering Health Network. There she worked for several years each in Neuro, Cardiac and Intensive Care before becoming a float nurse. "Now, I do it all," she said. Maxwell is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree through Ohio University.
