At $30,000 grant from the Dow Chemical Co. is making the Green Jobs Club a reality for local students.

With help from a private grant, high school students will be exposed to future green jobs as a part of a pilot program.

The Green Jobs Club-Building Green Futures is a Bucks County Community College program that will focus students on careers in conservation and sustainable energy. Part of the program includes activities and speakers from area alternative energy companies such as Gamesa, as well as learning about green jobs beyond sustainable energy, Emily Evans, director of Work Force Development at BCCC, said Friday.

"It's not just about alternative energy. The spectrum (of green jobs) is wide," she said, noting such occupations as water treatment, recycling, environmental engineer technician, brownfields technician, mechatronics technician and weatherization.

BCCC is funding the program, which begins in November, through a $30,000 Dow Gives grant awarded by Dow Chemical Co. The college applied for it in May.

Because the program will be offered through the Lower Bucks campus in Bristol Township, organizers will reach out to 30-plus high school students from Harry S. Truman High School in Bristol Township and Bristol High School in Bristol.

Students will meet about twice a month after school, Evans said. They'll study green living and energy efficiency while participating in environmental projects. At the end of the school year, there will be a two-week service learning day camp that will include a community beautification project at Silver Lake Nature Center.

Helping with the program will be college professors and staff, and mentors from the Veterans Green Jobs Program at the Green Jobs Academy in Bristol.

For more information on Green Jobs Club- Building Green Futures, students and parents should contact their prospective school counselors.
