| Being beautiful doesn't always get you job - Economic Times Posted: 08 Aug 2010 12:19 AM PDT WASHINGTON: While being beautiful may have opened a lot of doors for you, getting a job may not be as easy, according to a new study. A new University of Colorado Denver Business School study reveals that attractive women face discrimination when it comes to landing certain kinds of jobs. For titles like manager of research and development, director of finance, mechanical engineer and construction supervisor, attractive women are considered 'too masculine'. "In every other kind of job, attractive women were preferred. This wasn't the case with men which shows that there is still a double standard when it comes to gender," said Stefanie Johnson. The study showed that in job categories like director of security, hardware salesperson, prison guard and tow truck driver, attractive women were overlooked. However, attractive people do tend to score when it comes to salaries, performance evaluations and college admissions. "In jobs involving face-to-face client contact, such as sales, more physically attractive applicants could conceivably perform better than those who are less attractive," said Johnson. The results indicate that attractiveness was more beneficial for women applying for feminine sex-typed jobs than masculine sex-typed jobs. The authors said that managers have to rely more on information from the individual rather than on stereotypes about physical appearance. The study is released in the May/June Journal of Social Psychology. Five Filters featured article: "Peace Envoy" Blair Gets an Easy Ride in the Independent. | UF police reinstate 4 of 5 police officers involved in shooting - Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel Posted: 30 Jul 2010 10:16 AM PDT os-uf-police-shooting-20100730 GAINESVILLE — Four of the five University of Florida police officers involved in a March shooting of a doctoral student are back on the job. The university announced Thursday the reinstatement of the officers, who had been on desk duty since the March 2 shooting. Authorities declined to say what action will be taken with the fifth officer. An internal investigation continues. Kofi Adu-Brempong was shot in the face and hand while holding a metal table leg in a way officers said they found threatening. He was charged with aggravated assault on an officer and resisting arrest with violence. But the state attorney's office said in June that the charges would be dismissed if Adu-Brempong doesn't violate any laws, attends counseling and takes required medication. | Will Brian Scalabrine Get an NBA Job for Next Season? - SLAM Posted: 06 Aug 2010 07:02 AM PDT August 6, 2010 10:00 am | 39 Comments Scal tells the Boston Globe that his main goal is to play in the League, but he could also end up in Europe: "Scalabrine wants to play in the NBA next season, but offers to remain in the league aren't overflowing for the affable veteran, prompting Scalabrine to contemplate his immediate future. 'I don't know what my plans are,' he said. 'I'm just keeping it wide open. I've got good offers overseas, but my goal is to play in the States for one more year and see what comes from it.' Scalabrine, 32, played the entire second half of the season with an ailing right shoulder injured Jan. 7. He underwent surgery last month to clean out particles and remove bone spurs and remains in rehabilitation. Scalabrine struggled with his perimeter shot at times last season and it could have been attributed to the sore shoulder. He shot 32.7 percent from the 3-point line in 53 games. 'Before I could use my right arm (to play defense), it was hard, I had to do everything with my left hand,' he said. 'Everybody plays with injuries. I won't use it as an excuse.'"
