Her family's income bracket could qualify her for free, or reduced, tuition at Colorado State University come 2011 through the school's newly announced tuition breaks. But the incoming University of Colorado freshman said she'll likely stay put on the Boulder campus, affording tuition with loans and CU scholarships. | Cisco College snags job-building grant - Abilene Reporter-News Posted: 21 Jun 2010 11:53 AM PDT Cisco College has earned a grant to kick off a program that will prepare technicians to work at the newly developed Abilene Life Sciences Accelerator. Cisco's Abilene campus is one of 22 community colleges across the state set to receive grants from Texas Comptroller Susan Combs "to boost career and technical education for fast-growing industries," according to a news release. The Job Building Fund grant for all schools will total $3.84 million, and Cisco will receive $135,300 for equipment in the new biology technician and biotechnology laboratory technician programs. "We haven't been able to offer these classes yet because of some of the delays in building the accelerator, and we didn't have the equipment," said Cisco spokeswoman Amy Evans. With the grant money, Cisco will purchase a cell culture bioreactor, spectrophotometer, microscopes, a nitrogen cryostorage tank and more. Cisco is the only school to get a grant to offer biotechnology programs. Other schools throughout the state received grants to offer vocational nursing, welding and other programs. Abilene Life Sciences Accelerator, located in a 22,000-square foot building on Pine Street, is an incubator for fledgling biotech companies. ALSA's first company, Receptor Logic, moved in earlier this year. The Development Corp. of Abilene recently approved nearly $1 million in financial incentives for a second company, Austin-based Enavail, to move in soon. "Cisco is working closely with Receptor Logic in offering this whole thing," Evans said. The new courses are planned for the Abilene campus' second floor, which will be built in the coming year with the help of a $1.56 million capital campaign. Evans said Cisco is $35,000 away from reaching that goal, and construction bids will open in July. Courses could be offered in fall 2010 or fall 2011. Cisco recently got approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinator Board to offer the biotechnology programs. Students in the program will earn a certificate for entry-level positions helping biological and medical scientists in the laboratory. Schools that receive Job Building Fund grants must provide matching funds in the form of cash, equipment, materials, supplies and possibly personnel costs. Combs' office said projects were selected based on the potential economic return to the state, and priority was given to projects that target high-demand occupations and new or emerging industries.
