| Realtor juggles job, nonprofit work - Democrat and Chronicle Posted: 02 Apr 2010 05:49 AM PDT For Erica Walther Schlaefer, being family-oriented played a key role in her career. The Irondequoit native planned to work in government or international business as a linguist, but after she graduated from college in 2000, Schlaefer decided to remain near her family. She spent time in the telecommunications industry before pursuing her real estate license in 2003, and soon began working for her father's Irondequoit-based company, Walther Realtors. Schlaefer and her husband also founded a nonprofit organization, Parenthood for Me Inc., in 2009. After five years of infertility treatments, the couple adopted a son and they now seek to support other couples both monetarily and emotionally through PFM. What do you do?I am a Realtor and office manager for my father's real estate company, Walther Realtors. I am also founder and president of the national non profit Parenthood for Me Inc., which provides financial and emotional assistance to those building families through adoption or medical intervention. What kinds of challenges does your industry face?Rochester has always been a pretty stable market. However, it is a difficult time to sell a house because of uncertainty in the job market. Our market has seen a dip in prices, and overall, homes are taking longer to sell. What's been your biggest career hurdle? The biggest obstacle in my career is time management between (my) occupation and Parenthood for Me. I aim to give the best customer service as a Realtor and manage our business effectively. As president of a non profit, I work hard to stay dedicated to our cause and mission statement. What is your ultimate career/life goal?To continue to thrive in my real estate business and to make Parenthood for Me a highly successful and recognized non profit. What advice would you give to other young professionals? If you have not yet found something that you are truly passionate about, keep searching. Volunteer, talk to different business owners, join your chamber of commerce or Rochester Young Professionals group. Through these experiences, you will discover the career path that is meant for you.
